"It was wonderful," say her Longview friends who tasted it. Since Child's death on Aug.

13, memories of her have flooded the hearts and minds of Betty Davis Lloyd and Claire Foster, both of Longview. Child's legendary voice, smile, great sense of humor and laid-back personality are among the traits they remember. Child, who brought fine French cuisine to a new frontier, came to Longview in 1982 to teach cooking classes at the Stockpot a catering business owned by Lloyd, Foster and Patricia Houston, who is now deceased. The women met Child in 1980 in the south of France where they had traveled to a famous cooking school to learn the art of French cuisine. They persuaded her to come to rural East Texas two years later.

Child spent a week in Long view and taught about 80 East Texans, who paid $525 each, how to prepare French food. "We talked her into coming to Longview to teach at the Stockpot Etc. when Julia didn't go anywhere," Lloyd said. "Julia came to Longview before she went anywhere." Man arrested after wife videotapes bridge BALTIMORE (AP) A man described as a highranking Hamas operative was arrested after he drove across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge while his wife videotaped close-up shots of the structure, authorities said Tuesday.

Ismael Selim Elbarasse, long suspected by authorities of having financial ties to the Palestinian extremist group, was taken into custody last week and held as a material witness in an unrelated terrorism case in Chicago. Neither he nor his wife was charged with any wrongdoing in connection with the videotaping. Gov. Robert Ehrlich said the arrest "shouldn't be a generator of fear. It should serve as a reminder that there is a war going on around the world." A federal grand jury in Chicago last week described Elbarasse as an unindicted co-conspirator in a 15-year scheme to finance terrorist activities in Israel.

Hamas has carried out suicide bombings and other attacks in Israel. Court documents allege he and defendant Mousa Mohammed Abu Marzook considered one of the highestranking Hamas leaders internationally shared a Virginia bank account that was used to launder hundreds of thousands of dollars for Hamas. His attorneys did not immediately return calls for comment Tuesday. A woman reached by phone at Elbarasse's home identified herself as his wife but declined to give her name and refused to comment.
